Whoever said Kilimanjaro is an “easy” high altitude mountain was absolutely lying. After our 7 hour accent to the summit we had to hike down. It only took us 3 hours to get down because we did not have to acclimate. On our way down we saw our other crew, team Poley Poley. They congratulated us and we told them they were so close!! This group has been a positive bunch with so much aspiration. Now that decent was BRUTAL. We went back to Barafu camp(15,000 feet) to eat lunch and pack our bags to make it to a lower camp (millennium camp) sitting at about 12,800 feet. The reason you go lower because sometimes the altitude can catch up to you so we sleep even lower. On our way down you could feel the oxygen re-enter your body. It felt good to be able to breath regularly and not worry so much. About half way down our “soldier” porters met us and took our backpacks from us to carry them down so we had less weight. These porters do EVERYTHING with NO complaints and smile on their face. They gave us the most freshest mango juice to help us through the decent. Once we got to Barafu, we were not allowed to rest, we packed and ate then headed to the lower camp which was a 3 hour MORE hike away. This day was a 16 hour day. The longest I’ve had to hike and endure on NO SLEEP. Once at millennium camp, the porters gave us “washy washy” a bowl of hot water to wash our face, feet and hands. Then I crashed HARD then woke up to our waiter porter telling us its dinner time. Forced myself up to eat dinner then crashed hard for the rest of the night. Our other crew team Poley Poley made it all the way to Uhuru but did not make it back to camp until about 7:30pm. 4 hours after us. But this company ensured we all would safely make it to Uhuru Peak!!
